★★★★ (4/5) Watch if you like: Sad indie soundtracks, rain-soaked forests, morally complicated love triangles, and movies that trust their audience to understand depression without spelling it out.

Pattinson had less screen time in New Moon than in any other film, but his presence looms. The Volterra sequence finally shows Edward as something other than a brooding romantic. In Italy, he is unhinged, desperate, and almost feral. Stripping off his shirt to reveal his diamond skin in the sunlight, he waits for death with a martyr’s peace. It is the closest the series comes to romantic tragedy.
